Engaging with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Workshop

Signature Workshop Series

A pair of two-hour structured sessions, this in-person workshop series will follow a flipped format (participants will read/prepare work in advance) and explore SoTL research questions, study designs, and methods.  The workshop, open to UArizona faculty, aims to support SoTL project design at our institution, particularly through proposals for CUES Distinguished Fellowships.

Workshop Dates & Themes

THU, MAR 14, 3-5 PM | Session 1: Research Questions 

Required Preparation (at least 2-4 hours time estimate)

  1. Read Chap 4, Generating the Research Idea (Bishop-Clark & Dietz-Uhler)
  2. Come up with a narrative paragraph articulating two research goals for a current or future SoTL project.  Please be prepared to workshop* these with your colleagues during the session. (We highly encourage coming with these in writing)
  3. Translate these two research goals into question form. Please be prepared to workshop* these drafted research questions with your colleagues during the session. (We highly encourage coming with these in writing)  *i.e., revise, evolve, improve

In this session, we will explore effective research questions for SoTL projects.  Planned activities include collaborative vetting of research questions from participants’ projects or project ideas, insights from a panel of CUES Distinguished Fellows, and real-time guidance from CUES mentors.  Participants are expected to complete pre- and post-session homework.

SAT, MAR 23, 11 AM-1 PM | Session 2: Study Framing, Design, and Methods

Required Preparation (at least 2-4 hours time estimate)

  1. (Required) Please come with written answers to the following questions: (1) What data do you plan to collect to address your research questions? (2) What tools or instruments would you need to use to collect that data? (3) How would you go about analyzing the data to answer your research questions? (4) What would you look for in the collected data? (see below)
  2. (Recommended) Read and/or browse as needed to complete 1. above: Ch 7 Analyzing the Data, Ch 5 Designing the Study, and Ch 6 Collecting the Data (Bishop-Clark & Dietz-Uhler)  

In this session, we will explore the relationship between theoretical framing, study design, and data analysis for SoTL projects.  Planned activities include guidance for aligning theory and study design to research questions in general.  Participants are expected to complete pre- and post-session homework.
