Abstract

Students are captivated by the rich blend of Indigenous, Spanish, and Anglo settler cultures, languages, and influences in the Arizona-Sonora borderlands. However, the abundance of digital information and the isolation brought on by the pandemic have increased reliance on screen-based learning.

This talk presents a project that reimagines study-abroad immersion as “study-a-near” through the principles of Place-Based Learning (PBL). Barry Lopez described such immersion as querencia: “a place on the ground where one feels secure, a place from which one’s strength of character is drawn—a place in which we know exactly who we are—the place from which we speak our deepest beliefs.”

This interdisciplinary project integrates PBL with local archival materials, drawing on the diverse epistemologies, histories, geographies, arts, and material cultures of the Arizona-Sonora borderlands. The presentation will discuss the approach to assessing the impact of PBL on faculty teaching and learning, student learning practices and academic choices, and undergraduate students’ sense of connection to their home places and region.
