Community Music as Creative Wellbeing: A Living Lab for Arts and Health Education
This three-year CUES project examines how intergenerational community music-making can transform musical learning in higher education while advancing culturally grounded approaches to arts and health education. The project centers on La Peña del SurCo, a monthly participatory Latin American folk music gathering founded by the fellow in 2023 and inspired by fifteen years of ethnographic research on socially engaged musical organizing in Argentina. Using ethnographic and participatory design methods, the project investigates how intergenerational community music making can support learning, wellbeing, and diasporic belonging across the lifespan; how Schools of Music can develop culturally grounded arts and health curricula; and how collaborative partnerships can sustain and expand initiatives like La Peña del SurCo. Outcomes include community-engaged pedagogies, a bilingual short film, curricular resources, and scholarly publications.
