Shaping Teaching and Learning Through the Intentional Use of Digital Tools
Formative assessment (FA) is an iterative process that guides teaching and learning based on students’ performance in classroom interactions, tasks, and assignments. Instructors can gather learning evidence using various FA tools, including digital ones (e.g., Top Hat, Socrative, Mentimeter). Beyond providing real time feedback for students, such tools can enable instructors to make informed pedagogical decisions, reframe explanations, scaffold learning in specific ways, etc. Despite their potential, research on the intentional use of digital resources in higher education is an emergent area of study. How do instructors intentionally use such tools to make instructional decisions? How do instructors' decisions influence students' participation and interaction with learning resources and content? Aiming in part to promote awareness of innovation in higher education and foster community among faculty, this project will explore such questions in collaboration with a group of campus instructors, deepen knowledge on FA and digital tools and co-create professional learning opportunities campus-wide.
