Town Hall on Advancing STEM Equity at Minority Serving Institutions

8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 23, 2020

The University of Arizona and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering & Medicine (NASEM) have partnered to convene a town hall focused on advancing STEM equity at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). 

Discussions will be foregrounded by insights conveyed in two reports, Minority Serving Institutions: America's Underutilized Resource for Strengthening the STEM Workforce and Transforming STEM Education at Hispanic Serving Institutions in the United States: A Consensus Report. 
 
This one-day meeting will gather key stakeholders, including but not limited to students, faculty, staff, and administrators from higher education institutions across the state, K-12 administrators, and business, non-profit, and community leaders to:

  • Develop strategic know-how to support the mission of MSIs
  • Examine promising practices for responsively supporting student success at MSIs, including workforce preparation in STEM fields 
  • Map future actions focused on the intersections of innovation and scholarship in teaching and learning and the mission of MSIs

Workshop | Measures Centered on Servingness for STEM Teaching, Learning & Student Support

Exercise Introduction: Guadalupe Lozano, The University of Arizona

  • Ideate: Two groups, consisting of about 10 participants each, discussed and developed student-centered measures at a macro, mezzo, and micro level that could arguably transcend normative measures.
  • Present: Each group presented their work, offering rationale for their proposed measures.
  • Receive Feedback: A panel offered thoughts regarding the viability of the innovative measures and the extent to which they are centered on servingness.
