Featuring Emily Jo Schwaller, CUES Distinguished Fellow, Assistant Professor of Practice in the University Center for Assessment, Teaching & Technology (UCATT), and Assistant Director of the Writing Across the Curriculum program, this hybrid seminar and panel will bring participants inside a CUES funded project and unpack its relevance for advancing teaching and learning at the University of Arizona (see abstract below).

Panelists:

  • Aimee Mapes, Director, Writing Across the Curriculum, UCATT; Associate Professor, Rhetoric, Composition & the Teaching of English, College of Social & Behavioral Sciences
  • Amritha Wickramage, Assistant Professor of Practice, Plant Sciences, College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences

Abstract

What makes an assignment meaningful? What do students remember across all their courses? How can we design meaningful assignments? In this panel discussion, we will dive into responses from nearly 500 students across disciplines about meaningful writing assignments. After an overview of themes, panelist Dr. Aimee Mapes will explore how this impacts students across all disciplines and what instructors should consider. We will then hear from Dr. Amritha Wickramage about how she used these results to adapt an assignment in her STEM General Education course. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of the characteristics of writing assignments at U of A or elsewhere, and ideas for incorporating these into their own classes.
